Wayne Macfadden MD treats patients with mental illness and Substance Use Disorders at the Spirit Lake Reservation. In this role, Wayne Macfadden MD evaluates new patients and develops Medication-Assisted Treatment plans to manage opioid and alcohol addiction.
Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) incorporates FDA-approved medications to help people recovering from addiction manage their cravings and reduce the severity of withdrawal symptoms. While MAT is highly effective, there are many commonly held misconceptions about the approach. For example, some people express concern that MAT encourages dependency. However, the therapies used in MAT do not provide the euphoria associated with opioids and are much less addictive. Additionally, MAT is administered under strict professional care, which enhances patient safety. Another misconception is that MAT is a short-term solution. However, evidence shows that MAT is most effective when used for at least 12 months. Further, most patients can benefit from MAT even longer term without experiencing significant side effects.
